What are Anti-Anxiety and Sedatives?
Anti-Anxiety and Sedative drugs are prescription drugs used to relieve anxiety and/or help with sleep, but their use can result in dependency and a substance use disorder. These medications include antidepressants like Cymbalta (duloxetine), Wellbutrin (bupropion), Zoloft (sertraline) and Paxil (paroxetine); benzodiazepines like Xanax (alprazolam), Valium (diazepam), Ativan (lorazepam) and Klonopin (clonazepam); antihistamines like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Claritin-D (loratadine)and Zyrtec (cetirizine).
Immediate effects:
Antianxiety drugs and sedatives decrease alertness and can result in
Slurred speech
Poor coordination
Confusion
These effects are magnified when people take alcohol. These drugs may make people alternately depressed and anxious.
