What are Opioid Medications?

Opioid drugs are a class of medications that relieve pain by acting on opioid receptors in your brain cells. The two main types are morphine, which is derived from the poppy plant, and heroin, which is made in laboratories. When these drugs attach to these receptors, your brain sends messages that block out pain and promote feelings of pleasure.
